“Review of The Midwest in American Architecture, edited by John S. Garner”
by Leonard Eaton (1992)
Reviews the same Walter L. Creese festschrift covered independently by Mary Corbin Sies in the Journal of American History (see sullivan181.pdf), giving a fuller essay-by-essay account. Eaton highlights Craig Zabel's essay on George Grant Elmslie's effort to sustain Louis Sullivan's legacy, including Elmslie's late Maxwelton Braes Resort; Narciso Menocal's reassessment of Sullivan's banks; Roula Geraniotis's tracing of German and Austrian influence (Richard Wagner and Gottfried Semper's proscenium theories) on Dankmar Adler's design of the Auditorium Theatre; Deborah Slaton's history of Burnham & Root's Rookery; Christopher Vernon's study of Walter Burley Griffin's landscape designs for the Martin, Mueller, and Irving residences; Ellen Weiss on the Bay View, Michigan chautauqua community; Susan Appel on Midwest brewery architecture; and John Garner's own essay on S. S. Beman's design of the company town of Pullman. Eaton judges the collection uneven in scholarly maturity but valuable as a whole as a tribute to Creese's influence on the field.
